Fender
January 16, 2025
A fender is a portable cushioning device hung between a boat and a pontoon, quay, pile, lock wall, or another vessel. Usually made from inflatable PVC, foam, or rubber, it protects the hull and topsides by absorbing compression and abrasion during berthing, mooring, rafting up, and alongside transfers.
Correct fendering is critical when wind, wash, tide, or limited space makes close-quarters handling difficult. Match fender size to the boat’s displacement and freeboard, position them at likely contact points along the Hull, and secure them with Rope to a Cleat so height can be adjusted quickly.
Before entering a marina or anchorage, check forecast wind direction, gusts, swell, and tidal flow in PredictWind to prepare lines and fenders early. Strong crosswinds or surge may require extra fenders at the bow, stern, or widest beam, plus attentive crew communication during the approach.
