Rain Radar

February 27, 2025

Rain radar is near-real-time weather radar imagery showing the location, movement and intensity of precipitation around coastal waters, harbours and nearshore routes. It detects rain droplets using reflected radio pulses, helping mariners distinguish active showers or rain bands from longer-range forecast guidance.

For boaters, rain radar is useful for timing departures, reefing early, avoiding heavy downpours, and judging whether a squall line may affect visibility or deck safety. It complements forecast data such as Rainfall, severe-weather cues like Lightning, and broader passage decisions made with Weather Routing.

PredictWind rain maps and model forecasts help extend planning beyond local radar range, especially when viewing ECMWF, GFS or ICON precipitation patterns. Offshore, where land-based radar coverage is limited, downloaded GRIB data in the Offshore App becomes the practical tool for monitoring developing rain systems.
