Weather routing algorithms typically use wind and current to calculate the fastest or safest route. However, the biggest factor for comfort and safety is typically the wave conditions. Whilst the PredictWind weather router has always had the ability to use a wave polar, which can define the adverse effects of wave conditions on the boat performance, this functionality is rarely used in practise. For most sailors, it is simply “too hard” to predict or even guess their boat’s performance in all the possible wave conditions.

Using advanced wave modelling of your boat's characteristics, the PredictWind router can now predict the performance of your boat in all wave conditions. Experienced sailors intuitively know that wave conditions can have a dramatic effect on the boat's performance. How the waves affect your performance is now auto-calculated in the routing algorithm so you can benefit from a more accurate, safe and comfortable route. Simply enter in your Beam, Length on Water Line, Draught, and Displacement to activate this automatic wave routing feature. This feature is available for all Standard and Professional accounts.

By modelling your boat’s characteristics in all possible sea conditions, the boat’s roll, vertical acceleration and boat slamming incidence can be calculated.

High vertical accelerations can be dangerous, and can also be a good indicator of the potential for the crew to get sea sick.

The ocean surface can be affected by different wind waves and swells of varying sizes and directions. To help you make critical decisions for your safety and comfort, we calculate the above safety metrics using primary, secondary, tertiary swell, and wind wave data. These can be viewed as a combined output, or dig deeper to look at each swell layer individually.
