Cargo

February 27, 2025

Cargo is the goods, materials, equipment, livestock, refrigerated produce or packaged freight carried aboard a vessel for transport by sea. On commercial ships it may be containerised, liquid, dry bulk or specialist cargo; on smaller vessels it can include supplies, tools or mission equipment carried beyond normal personal gear.

Cargo matters because its weight, height and position change a boat’s Displacement, trim and centre of gravity. Poor stowage can increase Draught, reduce Freeboard, slow the vessel, or create a dangerous shift in rough water. Securing loads, balancing port and starboard, and allowing for access to safety gear are essential before departure.

Forecasts and routing help crews choose weather windows that protect the vessel and load. PredictWind Weather Routing can account for wind, waves and currents when planning passages for loaded yachts, workboats or commercial craft, helping avoid conditions likely to cause excessive rolling, slamming or cargo movement.
