Currents Maps

February 27, 2025

Currents maps are marine chart overlays or forecast maps that show the direction and speed of water movement across coastal waters, channels and open ocean. They usually use arrows, colour shading and speed values in knots to display how currents vary by location and time, helping skippers understand the water flow affecting their vessel.

For boaters, currents maps are vital for passage planning, safety and efficiency. A favourable stream can increase speed over ground, while an opposing current can slow progress, increase fuel burn or create rougher seas when combined with wind. They support decisions linked to Tidal Current, Tidal Stream and Weather Routing.

Currents maps are most useful when viewed alongside tide, wind and wave forecasts. In PredictWind, current data can be considered in routing and offshore planning, including GRIB-based downloads in the Offshore App where available. Related tools such as a Tidal Atlas help interpret local flow patterns.
