Military
February 27, 2025
Military, in a maritime context, describes naval or defence-related vessels, operations, exercise areas, firing ranges, security zones and restricted waters that may affect civilian navigation. It includes warships, patrol craft, submarines, aircraft activity and temporary exclusion areas announced through official marine notices.
For boaters, military activity matters because it can change safe routes, limit anchoring options, create radio reporting requirements, or introduce fast-moving vessels with restricted manoeuvrability. Keep a proper lookout, monitor AIS where fitted, listen on VHF Radio, and be alert for Search And Rescue or security broadcasts.
When planning a passage, check charts, notices to mariners and local authority updates alongside weather and sea-state forecasts. PredictWind can support timing and route decisions with forecasts, GRIB data and Weather Routing, but official military restrictions and navigation warnings should always take priority.
