Reefer

February 27, 2025

A reefer is a refrigerated cargo ship, or more commonly a refrigerated container carried aboard a ship, used to transport perishable goods at controlled temperatures. In marine operations the term refers to the vessel, container, or cargo system, including insulation, refrigeration machinery, monitoring and power supply needed to maintain the required set point throughout the voyage.

For boaters, reefers matter because they are often large, schedule-driven commercial vessels with limited manoeuvrability and strict port windows. When crossing shipping lanes or entering busy harbours, identify reefer traffic by AIS, monitor CPA, and allow for the priorities and handling constraints associated with temperature-sensitive Cargo.

Weather affects reefer operations through fuel use, speed loss, container power demand and port access, while smaller operators moving chilled catch or provisions also rely on reliable forecasts. PredictWind forecasts, GRIB data and Weather Routing help crews choose safer passages, avoid severe sea states and maintain efficient schedules.
