Swivel

January 16, 2025

A swivel is a rotating marine fitting fitted between loaded components, such as an anchor and chain or a block and line. It allows controlled rotation so the connected parts can align without twisting the chain, rope or cable. In anchoring, the swivel must be properly sized, load-rated and compatible with the surrounding hardware.

For boaters, a good swivel can make retrieval smoother and reduce twist in the Anchor Chain or Anchor Rode, especially when a boat swings with tide or wind. Poor-quality or incorrectly fitted swivels can become a weak point, bind under side load, or fail at the pin, so inspection, correct orientation and secure Shackles are essential.

Swivels are most relevant to anchoring systems, moorings, towing gear and some sailing rigging. Before anchoring in exposed conditions, PredictWind forecasts help assess wind shifts, gusts and sea state so you can choose a safer position and check whether your ground tackle is suitable for the expected loads.
