ECMWF
June 9, 2025
ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) is a leading global numerical weather model used for marine forecasting. For sailors and power boaters, it predicts large-scale wind, pressure, rain, temperature and wave-related conditions over several days, helping describe the systems that shape offshore and coastal passages.
Its value is in spotting developing lows, fronts and pressure gradients before they affect your route. Understanding ECMWF alongside other Forecast Model guidance supports Weather Routing and Departure Planning, helping choose safer windows, avoid adverse wind-against-tide situations, and optimise sail trim or fuel use for expected conditions.
In PredictWind, ECMWF can be compared with GFS, ICON and higher-resolution forecasts to assess agreement between models. Offshore crews can download ECMWF data as GRIB files in the Offshore App, making it practical to monitor changing weather and update routing decisions at sea.
